Grandma’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Don’t even try to tell me that your mouth isn’t watering looking at these gorgeous cookies.  I am here to tell you that they taste as good as they look.  Grandma didn’t mess around, folks. Everyone’s grandma had that one (or in my case, multiple) sweet treats that they would make. No one could come close.  Grandma had her bag of tricks and every now and then she would share them with the world. This Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe is just that.  Her secret?  Mayonaise.  WHAT??  Just trust me and try it.  If you doubt me, look at the pictures one more time. Now, go get your ingredients ready.

You are going to love these amazing cookies! I promise you won’t be able to taste the mayonnaise.  It will just add to the level of moisture in this cookie. Making a soft, pull-apart, most amazing oatmeal chocolate chip cookie you have ever tasted.

Tips, Tricks, and Variations

  • If you like oatmeal raisin cookies, you can substitute the chocolate chips for raisins.  I know of a few people who like both, go for it!  Just don’t’ skip the super secret ingredient!
  • Chopped pecans can also be added to this recipe for a different texture.
  • You can use other variations of oatmeal, just make sure it is prepared ahead of time before you add it into the recipe.

Grandma’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups dark brown sugar, packed
  • ¾ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups quick-cooking oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In medium bowl, beat brown sugar, mayonnaise, egg, and vanilla for about 2 minutes. (You can use a hand-held mixer or stand mixer, but grandma recommends doing it by hand.) Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, cinnamon, and baking soda.
  • Slowly add the mayonnaise mixture to the oat mixture and stir by hand until just combined.
  • Stir in chocolate chips.
  • On prepared baking sheets, drop dough by level tablespoonfuls, 3-inches apart.
  • Bake 8-10 minutes or until golden.
  • Cool cookies on a wire rack.

  1. Do you make the oats into oatmeal before adding it to the ingredients? In your tips section you mentioned it should be prepared before adding but in the recipe there isn’t a step for preparing the oatmeal. Can’t wait to try.
