How did I get to be almost 40 years old and not know how to clean a refrigerator? Well, all that has changed now. Once you know how to do something right, how often to do it, and how to make it easier for future cleanings, there are really no excuses!

How to Clean a Refrigerator

I am not a naturally organized person. (just look at that mess!) I really have to work at it, especially with 5 kids and living on a homestead.

Sometimes I even enjoy doing it.

Sometimes things just get so bad it’s either “throw the messy thing away” or “clean the messy thing”. I can’t throw my fridge away, so I decided to give it a good cleaning.

Seriously. Those are CRACKERS on the shelf. And there is so much stuff shoved into there I have no idea what food we actually have. Is it edible? Expired?

So I turned to google and searched “how to clean a fridge”. If I was going to get in there I was going to do it right! I looked at articles and pictures and kept seeing all these weird baskets in the fridge and storage organizers and lazy-susans and it was all pretty confusing.

I mean, why would I need a lazy susan for my salad dressings when there was perfectly good space in the door?

And why would I need a basket for fresh veggies when I had a drawer designed and designated for them?

So, instead of making a trip to Bed, Bath & Beyond I decided that a good cleaning was all my fridge needed.

Start by Removing Everything

I started taking things out. Like, everything. I piled food up on the counter and when that was full the other counter and when that was full the table.

I wanted to make sure that I moved quickly to preserve the freshness of everything so once I started taking things out I didn’t stop.

When I had removed all the food I looked at the shelves and drawers and realized there was a LOT of dirt behind things. So I took it a step further and removed all the drawers and shelves too!

Removing the shelves and drawers meant I could close the fridge, give them a hot soapy bath and get them back into the fridge. This ended up being faster than standing in front of an open fridge scrubbing cold shelves.

Check on Expiration Dates

Once I had the shelves, drawers, and door shelves back in the fridge I wanted to make sure that every food item was safe to eat.

I threw away quite a few leftovers, but also food that had expired in the package. (I lie. I actually put things in our compost pile and fed the food to the chickens.)

This decreased the contents of the fridge by half!

Cleaning the Refrigerator

Make sure to wipe down the interior of the refrigerator and all the shelves with a hot towel or sanitizing wipes. I prefer hot water as I like to keep my refrigerator as chemical-free as possible. A little vinegar in some hot water works wonders!

Important Tips

Keeping milk on a lower shelf and out of the door. I have read studies that say milk stays fresher longer when stored on a shelf in the fridge.

There needed to be room for leftovers. Leftovers (and having them easily accessible) is simply a fact of life in a family of 7.

I need to be able to see what I have. As you can barely see in the photo below, I had three BIG containers of mayo. We don’t even eat mayo that often, so this is not only a waste of food but of space. Knowing how much I have of certain products at a quick glance saves time, money, and space.

My butter needs its own shelf! When you make 20 pounds of buttercream every month you are going to go through a lot of butter. Not to mention cooking and regular daily use!

Why I have so many containers of crescent rolls, I have no idea.

Fruits and vegetables should go in the designated drawer. (Except for the kiwi… we go through a dozen in one sitting so placing them on the shelf works for our family.)

I also discovered that I was storing my herbs wrong… that things like parsley and cilantro should get a quick bath when I bring them home and then be wrapped in a damp paper towel. (or clean dish towel) Brussel sprouts were cleaning and placed in a sealable plastic bag. And my peppers should be stored in the fridge instead of on the counter, which was news to me!

Turns out we are pretty obsessed with cheese. 🙂 Cheese gets it’s very own drawer. #noshame

What did I learn?

It’s wise to have an organized fridge.

It’s good to go through the contents of the refrigerator and toss what is expired.

Taking everything out, cleaning, then putting contents back in seems to be quicker than working one shelf at a time. (From beginning to end I spent 1 hour on this project.)

No fancy “fridge organization” gadgets are needed! In a space that is constantly changing to adapt to its inhabitants, shelf organizers and lazy susans ended up be more trouble than they were worth.

Now that my fridge is somewhat organized I think I need to re-evaluate how I refer to myself. Maybe I do have some organizational skills in me!

    I do have 2 lazy susans in my fridge. My door storage is pretty small, and each lazy Susan has jarred products. One has pickles, relish, olives, etc, the other has things like minced garlic, Dijon mustard, horseradish, etc. I am not having to dig around in my fridge to find these items when I can give a spin and select the needed ingredient.

  4. Having an organized fridge definitely makes life easier! I take everything out and sanitize the shelves every Thursday morning… only because my milkman delivers my groceries (and milk in glass bottles)! ????

    organize not only my frige, but my house! I even found a piece of mail date
    back to 2010…good thing it was nly junk mail!!

  8. I LOVE seeing your organization skills! Those containers/bins/lazy susan ideas all over the internet were also bothering me because they can get expensive and they’d have to be moved around probably after every major shopping trip. They seemed much more of a hassle than they’re worth, but I want to keep things organized. You did a great job and did it realistically–this is not a stylized kitchen on a TV show. I love that you’re keeping it real.
    I saw all that butter and said to myself, “I hope she buys it at Costco!” before I saw the Kirkland Signature on one of the boxes.

    Also, I want to steal your cheese drawer, haha!
