Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced (about ½ cup)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 ½ cups ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • toasted baguettes, or bagel chips for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to broil. (The top oven rack should be about 6 inches from the broiler.)
  • In a large, oven-safe skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, onions, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix and continue cooking until the beef is no longer pink. Once cooked, drain grease (if draining).
  • Add in beef broth, ketchup, and mustard. Stir until all ingredients are incorporated.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water. Pour into the beef mixture and stir, cooking until thickened.
  • Remove the pan from heat and stir in a cup of the cheese until melted.
  • Top with the remaining cheese.
  • Transfer the skillet to the oven and broil until the cheese is hot and bubbly (3-5 minutes).
  • Serve warm with toasted baguettes or bagel chips.
