Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • cups chicken broth, or vegetable broth
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add oil, flour, and chili powder. Whisk together and cook until fragrant (about 1 minute).
  • Add in the tomato sauce, chicken broth, salt, pepper, garlic powder, cumin, and oregano. Whisk to combine. Simmer, whisking occasionally, until thickened (about 6-8 minutes).
