  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • cups ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • toasted baguettes, or bagel chips for serving

  1. Preheat oven to broil. (The top oven rack should be about 6 inches from the broiler.)

  2. In a large, oven-safe skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, onions, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Continue cooking until the beef is no longer pink. (Optional: Drain grease)

  3. Add in beef broth, ketchup, and mustard. Stir until all ingredients are incorporated.

  4. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water. Pour into the beef mixture and whisk, cooking until thickened.

  5. Remove the pan from heat and stir in a cup of the cheese until melted.

  6. Top with the remaining cheese.

  7. Transfer the skillet to the oven and broil until the cheese is hot and bubbly (3-5 minutes).

  8. Serve warm with toasted baguettes or bagel chips.
