Ingredients

Sloppy Joe Dry Mix

  • ½ cup dried minced onion
  • ½ cup (100 g) light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 ½ tablespoons dry mustard powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper

To Make Sloppy Joes

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3 tablespoons sloppy joe mix
  • ¾ cup (204 g) ketchup
  • cup water
  • hamburger buns, toasted, for serving

Instructions

To Make the Dry Mix

  • Whisk all ingredients together in a medium bowl until well combined. This makes about 1 ½ cups of dry mix, or enough for about 8 pounds of ground beef.*
  • Transfer to an airtight jar or container and store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.

To Make Sloppy Joes

  • In a medium skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until no longer pink. Drain excess grease.
  • Stir in 3 tablespoons of the dry sloppy joe mix, ketchup, and water. Mix well to combine.
  • Simmer over medium-low heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  • Serve warm on toasted hamburger buns.

Notes

*If you’re making Sloppy Joes for just 1 pound of ground beef and don’t want to prepare the full batch of seasoning, whisk together:
  • 1 ½ tablespoons dried minced onion
  • 1 ½ tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
Cook the beef until no longer pink, drain, then stir in the seasoning mix along with ¾ cup ketchup and ⅓ cup water. Simmer 5 to 7 minutes, or until thickened.
