Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Cowboy Butter: It’s all about this super special compound butter. It is so easy to make and so full of flavor! It is a game-changer when it comes to compound butter, I would say. This recipe uses a double batch of my recipe.
  • Bread: I used an Italian loaf, cut in half to hold all of the delicious toppings! But, you can use any other sturdy, crusty bread that you prefer. Some good options would be a French baguette, sourdough bread, or ciabatta.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: For its mild, creamy flavor, I like using mozzarella cheese. But, other good melting cheeses like cheddar, provolone, Monterey Jack, or gouda can be used instead.
  • Parmesan Cheese: If possible, use freshly shredded parmesan cheese. Pecorino Romano or asiago would also be delicious.

Can I Make Cowboy Butter In Advance?

Yes! Cowboy butter can be made ahead of time so it’s ready to go when you are ready to use it. Once made, it can be stored for up to 5 days in the refrigerator and frozen for up to 4 months.

Storing & Reheating Cowboy Butter Garlic Bread

To Store: First, let the garlic bread cool completely. Next, wrap it in aluminum foil and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Or, freeze the bread for up to 3 months.

To Reheat: For the best results (to crisp up the bread again), reheat the bread in the oven or air fryer. You could also use a microwave or toaster oven.
