Creamy, comforting, and effortless, this Slow Cooker Chicken Alfredo Pasta is the perfect dinner for busy weeknights or lazy weekends. This is a creamy Alfredo – mild and comforting rather than spicy. If you like a little heat, the crushed red pepper flakes are easy to increase. Tender chicken, al dente pasta, and a rich, cheesy sauce come together right in your slow cooker for a meal that feels indulgent but requires almost no hands-on time. Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Heavy Cream: Heavy whipping cream provides the rich, creamy base for the Alfredo sauce. You could swap for half-and-half for a slightly lighter sauce, but it will be less thick.
  • Chicken Broth: Adds savory flavor. Low-sodium chicken broth works well if you want more control over salt. Vegetable broth could be used for a lighter flavor.
  • Butter: Cubed butter melts into the sauce for richness. You could use unsalted butter and adjust the added salt slightly.
  • Garlic & Onion Powder: Essential for depth of flavor. Fresh garlic or onion can be substituted if you prefer, about 2 cloves of garlic and ¼ of a small onion.
  • Kosher Salt & Black Pepper: Basic seasoning. Adjust to taste; freshly ground pepper adds the best flavor.
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes: Optional for a touch of heat. Simply leave them out if you want a mild version.
  • Chicken Breasts: Boneless, skinless works best. You could use thighs for juicier meat or rotisserie chicken for a shortcut.
  • Pasta: I used rigatoni in this dish; it holds sauce beautifully. Penne, cavatappi, or another tubular pasta works, too.
  • Parmesan Cheese: Freshly grated gives the best melt and flavor. Pecorino Romano can be substituted for a slightly sharper taste.
  • Fresh Parsley: Adds color and a fresh note. Basil or chives can be used if you prefer.

FAQs

Can I use a different type of pasta?

Yes! Rigatoni works best because it holds the sauce, but penne, cavatappi, or even rotini can be used. Just watch the cooking time, as smaller shapes may cook faster.

Can I use thighs instead of chicken breasts?

Absolutely! Boneless, skinless chicken thighs would work fine! Adjust the cooking time slightly if they are very thick.

Can I make Slow Cooker Chicken Alfredo Pasta ahead of time?

Yes! You can cook the chicken and sauce ahead and refrigerate separately, then reheat and toss with freshly cooked pasta when ready to serve.

How can I make chicken alfredo pasta lighter?

Swap half the heavy cream for half-and-half or use light cream. You can also use less butter if desired, but the sauce won’t be as rich.

Can I add vegetables to Slow Cooker Chicken Alfredo Pasta?

Definitely! Broccoli, peas, or spinach fold in nicely at the end of cooking for extra color and nutrition.

Is this recipe spicy?

No. This is a traditional creamy Alfredo with mild seasoning. The crushed red pepper flakes are optional and only add a gentle warmth. If you prefer more heat, you can increase them or add a pinch of cayenne.

Can I use shredded rotisserie chicken instead?

Yes! Add it in the last 15 minutes of cooking just to warm through, and it will save time without sacrificing flavor.

Serving Ideas for Slow Cooker Chicken Alfredo Pasta

  • Classic Family Dinner: Serve straight from the slow cooker with a sprinkle of extra Parmesan and chopped parsley for a creamy, comforting meal everyone will love.
  • With a Side Salad: Pair with a crisp Caesar salad or a simple side salad to balance the richness of the Alfredo sauce.
  • Garlic Bread or Rolls: Warm, buttery garlic breadsticks, focaccia breadsticks (my favorite!), or soft, easy dinner rolls are perfect for soaking up the creamy sauce.
  • Vegetable Boost: Fold in lightly steamed broccoli, peas, or spinach for added color and nutrition; great for picky eaters, too.

How to Store Slow Cooker Chicken Alfredo Pasta

Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stove over low heat or in the microwave, adding a splash of milk or cream to loosen the sauce if needed.

Freezer: While pasta doesn’t always freeze perfectly, you can freeze the sauce and chicken separately for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat before tossing with freshly cooked pasta.

Serving tip: Always stir the pasta and sauce together after reheating to keep it creamy and smooth.

This Slow Cooker Chicken Alfredo Pasta is creamy, cheesy, and effortless; perfect for busy weeknights or cozy weekends. Tender chicken, al dente pasta, and a rich sauce all come together in the slow cooker for a family-friendly meal everyone will love!

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups (595 g) heavy whipping cream
  • 1 ½ cups (12 ounces / 378 g) chicken broth
  • ¼ cup (½ stick / 57 g) salted butter, cubed
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper, plus more for serving
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, about 1 ½ pounds total
  • 12 ounces rigatoni, uncooked
  • 1 ½ cups (150 g) Parmesan cheese, freshly grated, plus more for serving
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  • To a 6 to 8-quart slow cooker, add the heavy cream, chicken broth, butter, garlic, onion powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
  • Add the chicken breasts. Cover and cook on LOW for 3 to 5 hours or HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  • Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and transfer it to a cutting board. Once cool enough to handle, slice it into bite-size pieces. Cover and set aside.
  • Add the rigatoni directly to the slow cooker and stir to coat in the sauce. Increase the heat to HIGH. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender, about 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Return the sliced chicken to the slow cooker. Gently stir in the parmesan cheese until melted, and the sauce is creamy.*
  • Serve warm, topped with chopped parsley, additional parmesan, and freshly cracked black pepper.

Notes

*If the sauce seems too thick, stir in 1 tablespoon of chicken broth at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
