Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Oyster Crackers: One 9 or 10-ounce bag works perfectly. Mini saltines or small soup crackers can be substituted and hold the seasoning well. For extra crunch, pretzel snaps or mini pretzels also work; just watch the bake time so they don’t over-brown.
  • Butter: Melted butter helps the seasoning coat evenly and bake up crisp. (I prefer unsalted, but salted butter can work, too.) If you prefer, you could also use vegetable oil in place of the butter.
  • Cowboy Butter Seasoning Mix: It’s all about my homemade cowboy butter seasoning mix for these addicting crackers (It is the base of my cowboy butter, cowboy mayo, and cowboy cream cheese!) Three tablespoons of the seasoning mix add bold, savory flavor. You can experiment with other seasoning blends, like Cajun or garlic-parmesan, for a different twist.

FAQs

Can I make these crackers ahead of time?

Yes! These crackers are perfect for making in advance. Store them in an airtight container, and they’ll stay crisp for up to 2 weeks at room temperature.

Can I make them spicier or milder?

Definitely. Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder to the seasoning mix for heat, or reduce the amount of seasoning for a milder, kid-friendly snack.

Can I use a different type of cracker?

Yes! Mini saltines, small soup crackers, or even pretzel snaps work well. Just watch the baking time; thicker crackers may need a minute or two longer, and thinner ones a little less.

Can I use less butter?

You can, but keep in mind the coating won’t stick as evenly, and the crackers may be slightly less crispy. You can experiment with 1 to 2 tablespoons less if you want a lighter version.

Can I use this seasoning mix on other snacks?

Absolutely! Cowboy Butter seasoning works great on popcorn, roasted nuts, or even roasted vegetables for a quick flavor boost.

Serving Ideas

  • Snack straight from the bowl: Perfect for munching during a movie or game night. I plan to add them to my Super Bowl foods!
  • Party snack: Serve in a small bowl alongside chips, nuts, or dips.
  • Salad topper: Crush a few and sprinkle over salads like a simple side salad or soups like my potato soup or roasted tomato soup for extra crunch.
  • Mix it up: Toss with roasted nuts or popcorn for a flavorful snack mix.

How To Store Cowboy Oyster Crackers

Airtight container: Store completely cooled crackers in an airtight container at room temperature. They will stay crisp and flavorful for up to 2 weeks.

Avoid moisture: Keep them in a cool, dry place; humidity can make the crackers soft.

Don’t refrigerate or freeze: The crackers can lose their crispness in the fridge or freezer, so it’s best to stick with room temperature storage.

Tip: Let the crackers cool completely before storing; this ensures they maintain maximum crunch.

What the Test Kitchen had to say about this recipe:

Autumn

These cowboy crackers were dangerously snackable! The seasoning baked in perfectly and every bite had that buttery, herby kick.

Elizabeth

Wow, I could NOT stop eating these. There was a little bit of a kick after each bite (which I liked). And, I loved that you could taste the seasoning on each cracker. Amazing!

Stephanie

Such a simple recipe, but SO flavorful. But watch out…it's hard to stop eating them once you start!

Bella

I wasn’t sure how strong the flavor would be, but it coated evenly and baked on beautifully. The finished crackers were crunchy, savory, and addictive.
