If you are on this blog then you know that I love chickens, but, did you know that chickens love cabbage? This chicken feeder idea is absurdly easy and so inexpensive. You are going to want to try it right away.
I have been a bit under the weather the last few days. Nothing life threatening of course, but certainly sick enough to slow life down considerably. Thankfully, hubby was willing to run some errands yesterday.
Just so happened that the grocery store had cabbage on sale for .08 a pound! (Apparently, this is a common sale that occurs after St. Patrick’s Day.) He picked up about 50 pounds… but not for us of course. 😉 It led to a great chicken feeder idea!

He grabbed a 1×4 board and screwed in four 3/5 inch screws. He then inserted the cabbage onto the screw. Such an easy way to keep them in one place! (He’s pretty darn handy like that)
They LOVE IT! Guineas and Chickens love cabbage! (I think the guineas even more than the chickens if that is possible)
This is such an exciting time of year for the birds; they are starting to free-range again. Starting to explore the ground and world around them, visiting familiar places and enjoying the sun in their feathers.
But the ground is still sparse. Cold. And dead on the surface.
It does not sustain their hunger and when we can add some goodness to their diet it is a good day.
Thank goodness for handy hubbies who see a great opportunity to plump up our birds!
He has refilled the four cabbages 3 times now in 16 hours. And with 40+ pounds to go, I think we are going to have some very happy, plump, and energetic birds!
We like to have fun with our flock…check out our jumping chickens!
Great photos! Great idea. Feel better soon. Spring colds and flus are the pits lol. As usual, always enjoy your writing and all that you share.
Such a clever idea creating that feeding station for them all! I bet they are so pleased to have to weather to spread their wings and be out in the fresh air again, they look very happy!
