Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Honey Garlic Sauce: The sauce is made up of honey, soy sauce, lemon juice, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (crushed red pepper). Some of it is used to marinate the shrimp. The rest is used for the sauce in the dish. If you prefer a milder sauce, leave out the red pepper flakes–the sauce will still be delicious!
  • Shrimp: Look for large shrimp. I think fresh is best, and it’s easy to peel and devein. To peel, start from underneath. To devein, make a slit (not too deep) along the back of the shrimp, pulling out the black vein with the tip of a knife. It is up to you if you leave the tails on or off. (We removed the tails.) If using frozen shrimp (which is just fine), thaw and dry them before marinating.
  • Broccoli: Cut a head of broccoli into florets. Or, buy a bag of pre-cut florets to use.
  • Kielbasa: Kielbasa, also known as ring sausage, is a flavorful, lightly smoked sausage that is pre-cooked. I love using it in recipes! You could also use Andouille sausage, Mexican Chorizo, or other types of sausages for a different flavor profile.
  • Rice: I love the honey garlic shrimp, sausage, and broccoli over a pile of fluffy white rice. But, it would also be great over brown rice, quinoa, couscous, or cauliflower rice.

Ingredients

  • cup (133 g) honey
  • cup (85 g) soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled, deveined, tails removed
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets
  • 1 ring (13 ounces) kielbasa sausage, sliced into ½-inch rounds
  • cooked white rice, for serving
  • parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  • To a medium bowl, add honey, soy sauce, lemon juice, garlic, and red pepper flakes. Whisk to combine.
  • Place the shrimp in a large zip-top bag and pour in ⅓ of the sauce. (Reserve the rest of the sauce for later.) Seal the bag, removing as much air as possible. Massage the shrimp gently to coat them evenly. Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes, up to 2 hours.
  • When ready, to a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon oil. Once hot, add the broccoli florets. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the broccoli is tender, about 5 minutes. Transfer the cooked broccoli to a plate and cover with aluminum foil to keep warm.
  • To the same skillet, add the remaining olive oil. Once hot, add the sausage and heat, turning occasionally, until browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Add the marinated shrimp to the skillet with the sausage. (Discard the marinade in the bag.) Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until the shrimp are cooked through.
  • Pour the reserved sauce into the skillet and bring to a simmer. Cook for 3-5 more minutes, allowing the sauce to cook down slightly.
  • Add the cooked broccoli back to the skillet. Toss everything together until well-coated.
  • Serve over cooked white rice.
