Pigs in a Blanket

You can find the first written account for a Pigs in a Blanket recipe in Betty Crocker’s Cook Book for Boys and Girls, published in 1957. They are easy to make and fun to eat! So, when it’s time to serve some New Year’s Eve appetizers, make a few of these popular snacks that both adults and children love. Seriously, you will be surprised at how fast this appetizer will disappear! And, they are SO EASY to make. In fact, I also have Pigs in a Pretzel Blanket that are just as good! I will let you know how you can make them in an air fryer, too.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Dough: One part of this recipe that makes it so easy is the store-bought dough. Just grab a tube of crescent roll dough to use to wrap each sausage link. Pizza dough would also work as the ‘blanket’ in this recipe; however, baking time may need to be adjusted.

Sausages: Cocktail sausages are sausage links that are just a little smaller than regular sausage links. You will need 24 of them for this recipe. And, yes, you could use hot dogs, cut into smaller sizes that would just peak out from the dough when wrapped.

Egg: Beat an egg to brush over the dough for a nice golden brown color when baked.

Garlic Butter: I love the added flavor of garlic butter brushed over the baked pigs in a blanket, so don’t forget about that! (Although, they are simple and delicious even if you leave that off.)

For Serving: Of course, ketchup and mustard are obvious dipping options for pigs in a blanket. But, they would also be delicious with honey mustard, cheddar cheese sauce, beer cheese, or even BBQ sauce. Dip away!

Can I Make These Ahead of Time?

Sure! It’s easy to get this appetizer assembled and stored in the refrigerator the night before. Cover the pigs in a blanket with plastic wrap and place them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Or, freeze them for up to 2 months. Place the assembled appetizers onto a baking sheet and into the freezer for an hour or two, or until they are solid. Finally, store the frozen appetizer in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to two months. When ready to bake, let them thaw in the refrigerator. If you bake them directly from frozen, you will need to add a significant amount of baking time.

Air Fryer Pigs in a Blanket

If your oven is being used for another appetizer or a main dish, get out your air fryer to make these pigs in a blanket. Follow the assembly instructions. Then, instead of baking them in the oven, place a few into the basket of your air fryer. Air fry for 6-8 minutes at 325°F, flipping them halfway through. The size of your air fryer will determine how many batches you will need to make. Don’t forget about the garlic butter!

How to Store

Although best served warm and fresh, you can save any leftovers in the refrigerator. Store them in an airtight container for up to three days. Reheat them in the oven or air fryer.
