Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Yellow Onions: Yellow onions become sweet and tender as they cook. White onions work but will have a sharper flavor.
  • Ketchup: Forms the sweet-tangy base. Use your favorite brand.
  • Brown Sugar: Balances the tang. Light or dark both work.
  • Vinegar: White vinegar is classic; apple cider vinegar gives a slightly milder taste.
  • Chili Powder & Red Pepper Flakes: Add warmth and a little optional heat.

Pro Tip: For the classic chunky hot dog stand texture, leave it as-is. For a smoother sauce, pulse it a few times in a food processor after cooling.
