If you are hungry, try one of these Grilled Cheese Burgers, made with two hamburger patties in between two grilled cheese buns with all of your favorite toppings in between! It’s the best of both a grilled cheese sandwich and a double hamburger all smashed together into one mouth-watering sandwich! It is not for the faint of heart but for the ravenous of eaters! This makes just two sandwiches, but you could easily cut each in half for four satisfying servings. If you love an impressive burger, you should try my Rodeo Burger, too!

Ingredients & Substitutions

Beef Patties: The ground beef patties are simple to make with just four ingredients. You will need ground beef, hamburger seasoning, seasoned salt, and garlic powder. You could substitute ground turkey or chicken if preferred. If using frozen patties (cooked according to package instructions), this sandwich will be extra thick, so you may only want to use one patty.

Hamburger Buns: You will need four hamburger buns, two buns per sandwich!

Cheese: Use your favorite cheese on these burgers. (I used American cheese.) The slices will be melted in between two buns before sandwiching the hamburger patties.

Toppings: The toppings are up to you! I highly recommend my fry sauce somewhere on the burger (it really takes the flavor up a notch), or for dipping. Then, add more toppings like ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions, and any more of your favorite fixings.

Can I Make The Hamburger Patties Ahead Of Time?

Sure! To get a head start on this recipe, get the hamburger patties formed in advance. Once made, wrap them in plastic wrap and store them in the refrigerator. They will last up to a couple of days. Or, for longer storage, freeze the patties. To freeze, place the patties into the freezer until solid. Then, store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

Why You Will Love Grilled Cheese Burgers

Besides this being deliciously filling, there are other reasons you will love this grilled cheese, I mean burger, or should I say, sandwich:

  • It’s impressive! The size alone will be something people will be talking about.
  • It’s unique.
  • It’s a ‘two for one’ sandwich with a grilled cheese and a burger combined!
  • The name is fun to say!
  • It will fill you up if you’re hungry!
  • The juicy hamburger patties with all that cheese will make your mouth water.
  • Fry sauce will enhance the flavor, so don’t forget about that! I have an easy fry sauce you could make, too.

What To Serve With Grilled Cheese Burgers

There are plenty of delicious sides to serve with a grilled cheese bun burger, especially if you are splitting and sharing a burger. Here are some options:

How To Store Grilled Cheese Burgers

These are best served freshly made and assembled, but you could store leftovers separately if needed. The beef patties can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a few days. Store the grilled cheese buns in a separate container in the refrigerator. And, keep the fixings stored separately as well.

If you are hungry, try one of these Grilled Cheese Burgers, made with two hamburger patties in between grilled cheese buns with all of your favorite toppings! It's the best of both a grilled cheese sandwich and a double hamburger all smashed together into one mouth-watering sandwich! It is not for the faint of heart but for the ravenous of eaters! This makes just two sandwiches, but you could easily cut each in half for four satisfying servings.

Ingredients

Ground Beef Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon hamburger seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Grilled Cheese Buns

  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • ¼ cup (½ stick / 57 g) unsalted butter, softened

Optional Toppings

  • sliced tomatoes
  • sliced pickles
  • fry sauce
  • ketchup
  • mustard
  • sliced red onion

Instructions

Ground Beef Patties

  • Set out two sheets of parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, hamburger seasoning, seasoned salt, and garlic powder. Mix until just combined.
  • Divide the ground beef mixture into four equal portions (4 ounces each). Shape a portion into a loose ball and place it onto one of the sheets of parchment paper. Set the second sheet of parchment paper on top of the ball of meat. Using a rolling pin or your hand, press the meat into a thin, round patty about 5 inches in diameter. Set aside. Form the other three patties.
  • Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until reaching the desired doneness. (Depending on the size of your skillet, you may have to work in batches.)

Grilled Cheese Buns

  • While the beef patties are grilling, spread ½ tablespoon of butter on the inside of each half of the hamburger buns, totaling 8 halves (4 buns).
  • Into a separate skillet over medium heat, place four buttered buns cut side down. Top each with 2 slices of cheese and the remaining buns, buttered side up. Lightly press or smash the grilled cheese buns to reduce their thickness. Once golden brown and toasted on the bottom, flip the buns and cook the opposite side.

Assembly

  • Top one grilled cheese bun with a hamburger patty, your choice of toppings, another hamburger patty, and finally, a grilled cheese bun. Repeat for the second sandwich. Serve immediately.
