Ingredients & Substitutions
- Chicken breasts: I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Try to keep them similar in size for even cooking. You can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs; they stay extra juicy and work just as well. Season the chicken with Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- All-purpose flour: Creates a light coating that helps the chicken brown and slightly thickens the sauce. You can skip it for a lighter option or use a gluten-free flour blend.
- Yellow onion: Adds a mild, savory base. A white onion works in a pinch.
- Garlic: Fresh minced garlic gives the best flavor here.
- Orzo: A small, rice-shaped pasta that cooks quickly and turns creamy as it simmers.
- Chicken broth: Adds depth and flavor. Low-sodium chicken broth is a great option, so you can control the salt.
- Heavy cream: Makes the sauce rich and creamy. For a lighter option, you can use half-and-half, though the sauce will be a bit thinner.
- Lemon juice: Freshly squeezed gives the best bright, fresh flavor. Bottled can work, but the flavor won’t be quite as vibrant.
- Parmesan cheese: Adds a salty, nutty finish and helps thicken the sauce. Freshly grated melts best.

FAQs
Can I use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts?
Yes, boneless, skinless chicken thighs work great in this recipe. They stay juicy and add a little extra richness. Cook them the same way, adjusting the time slightly if needed, until they reach 165°F.
Can I use rotisserie chicken instead of cooking chicken breasts?
Yes, rotisserie chicken is a great shortcut. Simply skip the seasoning, flouring, and pan-searing step. Stir shredded chicken or chopped cooked chicken into the orzo at the end, just until warmed through.
Can I use a different pasta instead of orzo?
Orzo works best because it cooks quickly and creates a creamy, risotto-like texture. If you substitute another small pasta, you may need to adjust the liquid and cooking time to get the right consistency.
How do I know when the orzo is done?
The orzo should be tender with a soft bite, and most of the liquid should be absorbed. Stir occasionally as it cooks to keep it from sticking and to help it cook evenly.
Can I make this ahead of time?
This dish is best served fresh, when the orzo is creamy, and the sauce is smooth. If needed, you can make it ahead, but the orzo will continue to absorb liquid as it sits.
How do I loosen the sauce if it thickens too much?
Add a splash of chicken broth or a little cream and stir gently over low heat until it reaches your desired consistency.

Serving Ideas
This lemon chicken orzo is hearty enough to stand on its own, but it also pairs really well with simple sides to round out the meal.
- Serve with a simple green salad like my Simple Side Salad for a fresh contrast to the creamy orzo.
- Add warm bread on the side, something like garlic breadsticks or easy dinner rolls, is perfect for scooping up extra sauce.
- For extra veggies, serve alongside roasted Brussels sprouts, roasted asparagus, or roasted parmesan green beans for an easy weeknight dinner plate.

How to Store Lemon Chicken Orzo
Refrigerator: Store leftover lemon chicken orzo in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The orzo will continue to absorb some of the sauce as it sits, so it will thicken slightly.
Freezer: You can freeze it, but keep in mind the creamy sauce may separate a bit once thawed. If freezing, let the dish cool completely, then store it in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Reheating: Reheat gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat or in the microwave. Add a splash of chicken broth or a little cream to loosen the sauce and bring back the creamy texture. Stir occasionally while reheating until warmed through.

Lemon Chicken Orzo
Ingredients
Chicken
- 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts, about 6 to 8 ounces each
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ cup (31 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Orzo
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- ½ medium yellow onion, diced
- 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
- 1 cup (136 g) orzo, uncooked
- 2 cups (16 ounces / 480 g) chicken broth
- 1 cup (238 g) heavy whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice, from about ½ a lemon
- ½ cup (50 g) Parmesan cheese, grated
- Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Chicken
- If the chicken breasts are thick, pound them to about ½ to ¾-inch thickness for even cooking. Season both sides with Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Lightly coat each breast in flour, shaking off any excess.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through to an internal temperature of 165°F. Depending on the size of your skillet, you may need to work in batches. Transfer to a plate and tent loosely with foil to keep warm.
Orzo
- In the same skillet, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, or until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Add the orzo and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often, until lightly toasted.
- Pour in the chicken broth, heavy cream, and lemon juice, stirring to combine. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook uncovered for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and stir in the Parmesan cheese until smooth and creamy.
- Nestle the chicken back into the skillet, or slice and serve over the orzo. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired. Serve warm.
