Sweet Potatoes with Pecan Streusel Topping are mashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar and added spices, topped with a nutty streusel topping. Be sure to add this to your Thanksgiving Menu! If you love sweet potatoes, I also have a Sweet Potato Casserole topped with a homemade marshmallow meringue!
Sweet Potatoes with Pecan Streusel Topping
Is it a dessert? Is it a side dish? Actually, this could really satisfy both parts of the meal, like my Sweet Potato Casserole. In this recipe, the spiced mashed sweet potatoes are topped with a sweet streusel topping instead of marshmallows. It’s the perfect blend of sweet and slightly savory in every bite. Plus, the added pecans to the streusel give a nice crunch. You could definitely get the sweet potato critics on board when this is presented and tasted!
Ingredients
Potatoes: The more ways to serve sweet potatoes, the better! They are packed with vitamins and nutrients and can be served sweet or savory. These are baked to fork-tender and mashed in a food processor with spices.
Seasonings: The potatoes are seasoned with salt, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. You could leave out the cayenne if preferred.
Streusel Topping: The crumble topping has added pecans for crunch. However, you can certainly leave those out if preferred.
Can I Use Canned Sweet Potatoes?
Sure! To save time, you can use canned sweet potatoes. But, look for canned sweet potato puree. They usually do not have any added ingredients. You will need about 4-5 cups of sweet potatoes. Do not use sweet potato pie filling–that often contains sugar, spices, and other flavorings. (This recipe has all the spices you will need)
Can I Make Sweet Potatoes with Pecan Streusel Topping Ahead of Time?
Sure! You can get the potato mixture made ahead of time. Then, store it in the refrigerator, covered, overnight, or for up to 2 days. When ready to bake it, mix together the streusel, top the potatoes, and bake!
Freezing Sweet Potatoes with Pecan Streusel Topping For Later: If you are not planning to bake the sweet potatoes with pecan streusel topping within a couple of days, you could freeze the sweet potatoes. Again, freeze the dish before adding the topping. It will last in the freezer for up to a month. When ready to bake, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Have the recipe handy; your guests will be asking for it!
Can I Use a Different Sized Dish?
Although I baked this side dish in an 11×7-inch baking dish, you could also use an 8 or 9-inch square dish. If using a 9×13-inch baking dish, the filling layer will be slightly thinner. Adjust baking time as needed.
How to Store Sweet Potatoes With Pecan Streusel Topping
If you have any leftovers of sweet potatoes with pecan streusel topping, they can be stored in the refrigerator. Cover the dish before storing it; it will last 3-4 days.

- 3 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Streusel Topping
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (100 g) light brown sugar, packed
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 cup (109 g) pecans, roughly chopped, divided
- ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
Sweet Potatoes
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Using a fork, prick the sweet potato a few times on each side. Place sweet potatoes on the lined baking sheet. Bake until fork-tender (about 70-80 minutes). Depending on the size of the sweet potatoes, cooking times may vary.
- Allow the potatoes to cool for 15-20 minutes, or until they are cool enough to handle.
- When cool enough, use a sharp knife to cut each potato in half, horizontally. Scoop out the insides of each sweet potato, discarding the skins. Place the cooked sweet potatoes into the bowl of a food processor (about 4½ cups potatoes).
- Add eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, salt, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cayenne. Blend until smooth. (You could also use a hand mixer or a blender.)
- Spray an 11×7-inch* baking dish with cooking spray. Pour the potato mixture into the prepared baking dish. Set aside while you prepare the streusel topping.
Streusel Topping
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and ¾ cup of pecans.
- Add the melted butter to the flour mixture. Mix with a fork until the mixture is combined.
- Top the sweet potato mixture with the streusel topping. Sprinkle the remaining pecans evenly over the top of the entire dish. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
