Ingredients

Potatoes: You will need a 32-ounce bag of frozen, diced potatoes.

Kielbasa: Kielbasa (sometimes also called ring sausage) is a flavorful, lightly smoked sausage that is pre-cooked. You could also use Andouille sausage, Mexican Chorizo, or other sausages as substitutes.

Cheese: I used both sharp cheddar cheese and Monterey Jack cheese. You could stick to one kind of cheese if preferred.

Spices: You will just need some chives, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper for spices. You could leave out the cayenne pepper if you don’t want any extra kick to the dish.

What is the Difference between Kielbasa and Sausage?

Kielbasa is a sausage that originated in Poland. Both kielbasa and sausage come in quite a few varieties. However, there are differences between the two. Kielbasa is usually shaped like a horseshoe or in a loop. It is made with coarsely ground meat which gives it more texture. Authentic kielbasa is made with pork or a combination of pork and beef, while sausage uses a variety of different meats. You can find kielbasa in most grocery stores. In America, kielbasa is also called ring sausage.

I saw your recipe and couldn’t wait to try it, so I didn’t wait for the potatoes to completely thaw, so I reduced the milk a little bit knowing there’d be more moisture from them being partially frozen. Otherwise, I made it exactly and it was so yummy. Have added it to my favorite recipe rotations. Thank you!

  2. So excited to try this! So excited that I was wondering if there was any thoughts on making in Instapot instead of Crockpot. Recommendations on time? Or maybe I should just make tomorrow when I know I will have plenty of time!

Whatever you do, do not cook it longer than it says. We did ours on low for the 5 hrs. That would make it edible (4.5 hrs) would have been the best I think, or maybe 5 if your potatoes are frozen. It really had the taste and consistency of baby food. I thought the whole recipe looked so tasty, however for my family, a big pass. I will take the blame that I should have scooped
everything out of the crockpot after 4.5 or kept it on warm for 1/2 hr. But after the 6 hrs there was no luck on dinner. I gave it 3 stars because I’m saying it was my fault for over cooking it.

    1. You are welcome to rate a recipe low because you didn’t like the taste – everyones tastes are different. But – it tastes like the ingredients included in the recipe. (Which is great, as you can tell by the thousands of other reviews here, on FB, and on Pinterest.) What was your expectation? Maybe that is the discrepancy.

  4. Loved the recipe. I did slip in a touch of condensed bean with bacon soup. Turned out delicious. Very good and fun recipe. I have sauerkraut but that gets boring. Will definitely try this again. Also used a little hot sauce instead of cayenne. Thank you.Deano trevose pa.

Easy meal to prep. I peeled my own potatoes, which added a little extra time. Hearty meal for a cold night. I used half and half instead of milk.

  6. I used frozen shredded potatoes instead of the cubed(I put them in frozen). And I used just a Colby jack/Monterey jack cheese blend and added some frozen broccoli the last 3hrs. It turned out really good!

I changed it slightly based on diet and availability. I used cheddar cheese soup, and replaced the potato with cauliflower. So good!!

    1. Davi,
The frozen diced potatoes are hard to find if you’ve never bought them before. Try looking in the freezer section marked “potatoes” or “breakfast”.
      Hope this helps.
      Sincerely,
      Penny

  7. I made it for family with skinless smoked turkey sausage because it was the only skinless they had, which I prefer. Needless to say I have to make it again 1 1/2 weeks later because there was NO leftovers and everyone absolutely loved it!!😁👍

    Winner, winner kielbasa dinner!🙂
    My husband loved this!
I used 2 turkey kielbasa’s from Aldi’s and 2 bags of diced potatoes w/onion (fresh in the green bag). So easy! Cooked on high for about 3.5 hours. Potatoes could’ve been a tad softer but they were soft enough to eat!
It’s a great low and slow dinner!
    Keeper for sure!

I thought this was easy to make and it turned out great!

I used an Instapot on low for about 5 hours and then did it on high for the final 1 hour for reference.

Also, I would recommend the frozen potatoes that come with onions and peppers! It was a great addition.

    1. Did you use table salt? The recipe calls for kosher salt and if you used 1 teaspoon of table salt I can imagine it would be salty.

  10. Can I use fresh potatoes instead of frozen? I really have to arch my sodium because I have high BP and a lot of frozen foods are high in sodium
