Pizza Sauce is a homemade tomato-based sauce that requires no cooking and is better than any jar of pizza sauce you can buy. Use it on your favorite pizza crust recipe, Focaccia Pepperoni Pizza, or even Pizza Sliders the next time you are craving something Italian!
Pizza Sauce
Yes, you can go to your local grocery store or supermarket to grab a jar or can of pizza sauce. But, did you realize how easy it is to make your own? This tomato paste-based sauce is seasoned just right and can be used for more than just pizza. And, there is no cooking involved! Use it in my Skillet Pizza Dip, pizza rolls, pizza bombs, or as a dip for my garlic knots! It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days so you will have it when you need it!
Sauce Ingredients
Tomato Paste: This is a tomato-based sauce, so grab a can of tomato paste as the base. This gives the sauce lots of tomato flavor.
Seasonings: Add minced garlic, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper to the tomato paste.
Water: Add some water to the sauce to thin it out a bit. You could start with a lesser amount for a thicker sauce, but we were satisfied with the sauce using the full cup.
Oil: Use extra virgin olive oil for best results.
Can I Use the Sauce Right Away without Letting it Rest?
Well, you could, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It really is worth the wait. By letting the sauce rest, it gives the seasonings time to blend together for the most robust flavors. If you are not using the sauce after 1-2 hours, store it in the refrigerator in a sealed container for up to 5 days. It makes 1 2/3 cups of sauce.
Can I Freeze Pizza Sauce?
Yes! This homemade sauce is easy to freeze. To freeze it, pour the sauce into freezer-safe containers. Leave some room at the top before you seal the container. Freeze the sauce for up to 3 months.

What oil would be best to substitute for olive oil? My oldest is allergic to olive & soy. Can you give a couple recommendations?
If you look on Google you can get substitutes. It will give you just about any substitute you need. Veg oil, canola oil, sunflower oil plus more. Hope this helps.
This is the best and super easy. We put on individual size premade pizza crusts and put them on pizza stone with toppings of choice. Grill them on the Traeger.
I tried this last night on my homemade pizza. The very best I have tried. After years of trying sauces -I finally found the best
Dis is good!!!
Can I can it for canning when I do it again
Can I use avocado oil instead? Severe allergy to olive oil
Yes, please do avoid olive oil if you have an allergy.
I love most of your recipes and keep many in my arsenal, but I think you missed it a bit on this. I would describe this as more of a low end chain pizza. I would start with good crushed tomatoes like San Marzano. This should eliminate the sweetener, I’m in the anti-sugar team, I use carrot purée if I need to calm down the acidity. I use sweet basil, usually fresh, but that’s more work and dry tastes just as good on pizza. All the other spices are on point, except the sugar!! 🙂 I try to make it at least 24 hours ahead of time or longer like when I make the dough which is 72 hours minimum. This recipe is much brighter and fresh tasting. If you use a cheaper crushed tomatoes, you can up the tomato flavor with concentrate instead of tomato paste. One 28oz can makes enough for two pizza nights for us. That’s 3-14” pies.
Thanks for always inspiring me to make new things!
Hi Joe – This sauce is exactly what it is meant to be. Delicious, easy, and accessible by all. If you want a more “authentic” sauce that starts with the ingredients you have described, this other recipe may be more suited to your tastes. https://iamhomesteader.com/marinara-sauce/
Can this recipe be Water bathed?
Sorry. Guess I forgot how to read. lol
Best pizza sauce, Ever! So easy to make, and very tasty! Only pizza sauce I use! Thanks for sharing this little gem!
Could you use this for lasagna? It’s hard to find a good lasagna recipe that doesn’t use ricotta or cottage cheese. Family won’t touch either. Thanks.
Simply omit the ricotta or cottage cheese, substitute another grated cheese. In my opinion, lasagna recipes are merely a suggestion….make it your own, that’s cooking! Enjoy!!
Just make baked ziti, but use meat sauce rather than marinara. Or you might try Bolognese lasagna, which uses bechamel sauce along with meat sauce, but no ricotta or cottage cheese.
Looks good just don’t use any sugar.
You can certainly omit sugar if you want.
Sugar has been used for decades to cut the acidity of tomatoes – a small bit won’t kill you … try it!
This recipe does not give the measurements fot the ingredients. So for me it is not an option
Jerry, you had to scroll right by the recipe card to get to the comment section.
Yes it gave the amounts and instructions
If you scroll down to the recipe, I’m not sure how you are missing very evident measurements
How long do you process and do you water bath are pc
I would consult a canning recipe for specific instructions.
