Raw Ingredients for Homemade Pizza Sauce in a Bowl

Sauce Ingredients

Tomato Paste: This is a tomato-based sauce, so grab a can of tomato paste as the base. This gives the sauce lots of tomato flavor.

Seasonings: Add minced garlic, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper to the tomato paste.

Water: Add some water to the sauce to thin it out a bit. You could start with a lesser amount for a thicker sauce, but we were satisfied with the sauce using the full cup.

Oil: Use extra virgin olive oil for best results.

How to Make Pizza Sauce

Since there is no cooking involved when making this pizza sauce, it really couldn’t get much easier. To make it, simply whisk together all the ingredients in a medium bowl. Then, let the sauce rest for 1-2 hours at room temperature before using.

Can I Use the Sauce Right Away without Letting it Rest?

Well, you could, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It really is worth the wait. By waiting, it gives the seasonings time to blend together for the most robust flavors. If you are not using the sauce after 1-2 hours, store it in the refrigerator in a sealed container for up to 5 days. It makes 1 2/3 cups of sauce.

  1. I love most of your recipes and keep many in my arsenal, but I think you missed it a bit on this. I would describe this as more of a low end chain pizza. I would start with good crushed tomatoes like San Marzano. This should eliminate the sweetener, I’m in the anti-sugar team, I use carrot purée if I need to calm down the acidity. I use sweet basil, usually fresh, but that’s more work and dry tastes just as good on pizza. All the other spices are on point, except the sugar!! 🙂 I try to make it at least 24 hours ahead of time or longer like when I make the dough which is 72 hours minimum. This recipe is much brighter and fresh tasting. If you use a cheaper crushed tomatoes, you can up the tomato flavor with concentrate instead of tomato paste. One 28oz can makes enough for two pizza nights for us. That’s 3-14” pies.
Thanks for always inspiring me to make new things!

Best pizza sauce, Ever! So easy to make, and very tasty! Only pizza sauce I use! Thanks for sharing this little gem!

  2. Could you use this for lasagna? It’s hard to find a good lasagna recipe that doesn’t use ricotta or cottage cheese. Family won’t touch either. Thanks.

    1. Simply omit the ricotta or cottage cheese, substitute another grated cheese. In my opinion, lasagna recipes are merely a suggestion….make it your own, that’s cooking! Enjoy!!

Just make baked ziti, but use meat sauce rather than marinara. Or you might try Bolognese lasagna, which uses bechamel sauce along with meat sauce, but no ricotta or cottage cheese.

    1. Yup! This is what is says in the post:
